This chapter provides an introduction to the thesis, establishing the historical and historiographical context for the study of cholera and public health in nineteenth-century Belfast. It outlines the central arguments of the thesis, which examine how cholera epidemics shaped civic governance, medical practice, and everyday life in the town between 1832 and the 1890s.
The chapter reviews existing literature on cholera and public health in Britain and Ireland, locating Belfast within broader debates concerning the relationship between disease, poverty, environment, and state intervention. It argues that while the historiography of cholera in Britain has been extensively developed, Irish urban experiences remain comparatively underexplored. This thesis addresses that gap by providing a detailed case study of Belfast, a rapidly growing industrial town whose experiences of cholera were shaped by distinct political, social, economic, and institutional contexts.
Key themes introduced include the response of civic authorities and medical practitioners to epidemics, the role of philanthropy and poor relief, the impact of sanitary reform and municipal governance, and the everyday experiences of Belfast's inhabitants. The chapter also discusses the theoretical frameworks underpinning the thesis, drawing on social history, medical history, and urban history, as well as concepts of environmental determinism and the political economy of health.
The chapter then outlines the structure of the thesis, briefly describing the content of each of the subsequent chapters. It concludes by emphasising the significance of Belfast's cholera experience in contributing to wider debates on public health, state intervention, and the effectiveness of local governance in mitigating epidemic disease in nineteenth-century Ireland.
